PARENTAL ALIENATION

New Jersey (NJ) Parental Alienation Attorneys

During the divorce process, most parents are concerned with what is in the best interest of their child. Both parents are generally in agreement that disparaging the other parent in front of the child or to the child is not in the child’s best interests and could be emotionally and psychologically damaging. Unfortunately, there are cases where a parent will use a divorce and its underlying issues to tarnish the relationship between the child and the other parent. The divorce process often shakes up a family unit and adds stress and tension to all of the household occupants (parents and children alike). It is natural for a child of divorced parents to have a hard time making the adjustment to the divorce because it is a confusing time in their lives. A child is generally in need of reassurance from both parents during this overwhelming time as opposed to having one parent attempt to sabotage the child’s relationship with the other parent through alienation.

An evaluation may be necessary

If you believe that you are a victim of parental alienation, an evaluation may be necessary. First ask yourself if your child acts differently around one parent and actively “protects” the other parent. Additional signs of parental alienation exist if your child rebels aggressively against you and your family, you have been denied access to your visitation, school and medical records, child’s activities, etc. Also, if there has been any type of attempts to brainwash the children, it is often necessary to seek legal advice. Supervised visitation, parenting classes or best interest evaluations may be options to consider. Not every judge or psychologist believes in the doctrine of parental alienation, but they are still motivated to protect the best interests of all children.
