Marquis D. Jones, Jr. is an attorney with Weinberger Divorce & Family Law Group. Mr. Jones served as a Superior Court Judge (Family Part) in the State of New Jersey, Ocean County, Toms River. He presided over and rendered decisions in all areas of Family Law including but not limited to:
Authored many comprehensive opinions in child abuse and neglect cases;
Rendered thousands of domestic violence opinions after trial;
Decided countless post-judgment motions for modification of alimony and child support, parenting time, relocation, child custody issues; and
Conferred with government agencies such as the Department of Child Protection and Permanency (formerly known as DYFS) to reach positive results for families facing complex abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights and juvenile issues.
He was designated the lead Children in Court Judge in Family Court presiding over child abuse and neglect matters. Judge Jones presided over countless divorce, child custody matters, non-dissolution and juvenile cases. He has mediated and settled significant matrimonial related matters. While a member of the Superior Court Judiciary, Judge Jones also sat in the Civil Court division presiding over landlord tenant, small claims, special civil courts, and law division motions.
Prior to ascending to the bench, Mr. Jones was First Assistant Corporation Counsel/Acting Corporation Counsel, in Newark’s Law Department under the Honorable Cory A. Booker, Mayor. There, he managed, supervised and oversaw the Law Department sections comprised of the civil litigation, tax, real estate, municipal prosecutors, workers’ compensation, contracts and collections, and labor sections. He jointly worked with Corporation Counsel and reported directly to the Mayor, Business Administrator, and Chief of Staff; served as counsel to the Mayor and the Municipal Council; managed and oversaw all matters handled by outside counsel; maintained the Law Department’s budget; managed and oversaw the Law Department’s administrative matters; attended Municipal Council meetings and provided legal advice as necessary; and assisted the Business Administrator and Finance Director in managing the Insurance Fund Commission.
As a Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Jones prosecuted Medicaid Fraud matters which included supervising detailed complex criminal investigations to trial by researching, writing, and interpreting federal and state Medicare and Medicaid statutes and regulations, conducting state and county grand jury presentations, indictments, brief filings and motion arguments, sentencing, and coordination with state and federal agencies. He also served as an editor and article contributor for Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor’s Annual Report to New Jersey’s Governor and State Legislators. As an associate at Gibbons, he litigated cases pertaining to products liability, insurance defense, and mass tort.
Mr. Jones served his country for over ten years as an Intelligence Operations specialist in the United States Air Force serving nationally and internationally. He wrote, coordinated and presented Intelligence briefings to top command officers and aircrews, developed Intelligence correspondence, reports, and records reported as high as White House Situation Room, drafted, compiled and edited classified documents, wrote personnel proficiency reports, managed and supervised a supply accounts, and supervised mobility section. He also served as a Law Enforcement Specialist. Mr. Jones is also a qualified Family Law Mediator for clients who may choose to resolve their family and matrimonial issues without the need for costly and protracted litigation.
Mr. Jones graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers Law School, Newark and from Rutgers University, New Brunswick with a B.A. in journalism and economics.
Mr. Jones has been recognized by South Jersey Magazine as an Awesome Attorney. He has also been named by the American Institute of Legal Counsel as one of the 10 Best Client Satisfaction for Family Law in New Jersey.
